Eloquent “Infomedia” transforms a speaker giving a live presentation into a multimedia presentation. The Infomedia version of the live presentation contains a movie of the speaker, presentation slides, and a transcript. Infomedia is distributed on CD-ROM’s or over a corporate intranet; and viewed using the Eloquent Infomedia Player.
Installing the Player
In most cases, the Eloquent Infomedia Player can run directly off an Infomedia CD. Just double click the Eloquent Player icon to launch the Player. There are two exceptions:
• Playing an Infomedia CD that doesn't contain the Macintosh Eloquent Player.
• Playing an Infomedia CD Set (an event requiring more than one CD)
In these cases, the Player must be installed on a local hard disk. Also the Player will launch more quickly off of a hard disk than a CD.
(note: the Macintosh Eloquent Player is capable of playing ANY Eloquent Infomedia CD ,even if the CD does not contain the Macintosh Player)
To install the Player on a hard disk, simply drag the Eloquent Player icon at the root level of the Infomedia CD to a folder on you hard disk.
The system must have the following extensions installed: MathLib, ObjectSupportLib, and ThreadsLib. These system extensions are available on the Infomedia CD.
The memory control panel must have "Modern Memory Manager" turned on.
Many Infomedia events include slides and reference materials in Adobe's Acrobat™ (PDF) format. If you dont already have the Adobe Acrobat™ Reader installed on your computer, you can install the Acrobat™ Reader by running "Install Acrobat Reader 3.0" from the CD-ROM.
Starting the Player
When you start the Eloquent Infomedia Player with an Infomedia CD mounted, the Player will automatically select the mounted CD, open the "Player Window" and bring you to the "Talk View"
When you start the Eloquent Infomedia Player without an Infomedia CD mounted, you will see a dialog that lets you select a CD or an Eloquent Infomedia Server as an "Event Source".
* To select a CD, insert the CD and click on its volume name in the list of currently mounted Eloquent Infomedia CDs. Then press the “OK” button.
* To select a Server, type in the name or internet address (ip address) of your Eloquent Infomedia Server. Then press the “OK” button.
To change "Event Sources" once the Player is already started, select the File menu "Open Event Source..." item.
Using the Player
Once an Infomedia CD or Server has been chosen, the Player window opens. The window has three main views: Talks, Play, and Search. Tabs at the bottom of the Player window switch between the these views. Initially the Talk view presents the home menu page.
• The Talk View presents menu pages.
Menu pages contain clickable links to other menu pages and to talks. As the mouse passes over a clickable link, the cursor will change from an arrow to a pointing hand. Clicking on a link will load a new menu page or talk depending on the kind of link. The buttons at the top right of the Talk view load the home, previous, or next menu page.
After clicking on a talk link, the Play View appears ready to play the selected talk.
When connected to an Eloquent Infomedia Server, the Talk view contains an “Events” popup at the top left of the window. This popup lists all of the “Events” available for viewing on the server. Selecting an event will load the main menu page for that event.
• The Play View plays infomedia talks.
Start a Talk, by clicking the green play icon in the Player control panel. Dragging the slider bar next to this play/stop icon to moves to any arbitrary point in the presentation. Notice that the video, slides, and transcript move in synchronization.
Move forward or backward one slide at a time by clicking on the blue buttons in the Player control panel.
Search for specific topics within the current Talk by typing words or phrases into the box next to the search buttons (magnifying glass) on the Player control panel. Then pressing either the search forward or backward button.
The Play View gives you control over the display. Subpanes can be positioned by clicking and dragging on the subpane title tab. Subpanes can be resized by clicking and dragging on the subpane resize corner (lower right). The “Layout Dialog” allows you to choose from several pre-defined subpane layouts.
The “Volume and Speed” floating windoid lets you speed up or slow down the Talk to adjust to different speakers.
• The Search View searches across all Talks available on a CD or Server
Search for talks containing key words by typing the key words into the edit text field at the top of the Search View and pressing the “Search” button. Talks matching your search appear in the scrollable list area below. The selected talk is hilighted in blue. Details about the selected talk appear below the list area. Select a talk by clicking on its item in the list. Play a selected talk by pressing the “Play” button.
The Eloquent Player and Web Browsers
Links in menu pages can also refer to world wide web pages. After clicking such a link, the Player will tell a web browser to goto the url. If either Netscape Navigator, Apple Cyberdog, or Microsoft Internet Explorer is running, the running application will be used. If none of those browsers is running, the Player will look for them on disk (in the order they are listed above) and launch the first it finds.
In client-server installations, the Eloquent Player can act as a helper application for a web browser. To setup the Eloquent Player as a helper application for a web browser, the important things to know are:
